Hi Quentin, Ana and all,

Some of this has been done before (e.g. the short course linked below) but there is a real challenge to keep the material up to date and develop more detail on specific topics (like collections informatics and the various other branches).

https://www.idigbio.org/wiki/index.php/SPNHC_2017_Biodiversity_Informatics_101

I'm happy to contribute to this and I'd like to see some of these resources brought together in the training related activities via several ongoing projects. If nothing else, it would help in the delivery of my own teaching responsibilities.

Best regards,

Vince

Hi Ana,
Well spotted! There is massive need for this, indeed I recently wrote a correspondence to Nature making this very point (sadly rejected). I would suggest creating a Biodiversity Informatics curriculum, not just one one Collections Informatics. There in only a small pool of knowledgeable people and very little awareness of our domain knowledge in the informatics community as a whole. Yet, the need for biodiversity data and analysis is only increasing.

Quentin

Dear colleagues,

At the most recent SwafS infoday, we found this call which is currently open:  https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/portal/screen/opportunities/topic-details/swafs-08-2019;freeTextSearchKeyword=SWAFS-08-2019;typeCodes=1;statusCodes=31094501,31094502;programCode=H2020;programDivisionCode=null;focusAreaCode=null;crossCuttingPriorityCode=null;callCode=Default;sortQuery=openingDate;orderBy=asc;onlyTenders=false

It is called "Research innovation needs & skills training in PhD programmes". Within the challenge and the scope, they specifically mention several of the skills we constantly talk about at CETAF, e.g. data skills. Also, they would like to integrate courses by non-academic actors (e.g. as those promoted via MOBILISE or, specifically, our BIOTALENT project ) into formal education curricula, here with a specific focus on PhD training.

We think this could be a great opportunity for the CETAF community in general and the training-related interested groups in particular, to set up a proposal. The proposal is single stage with the submission due by 2 April 2019, making this a rather tight schedule, but attainable nonetheless.

We keep at your entire disposal for any further help you may need in this respect.

Kind regards,
