RE: [CETAF_ESG] Earth Science Group meeting Agenda

Dear Tom,
It depends where they are coming from. In Belgian there are plenty of caves where people come and take minerals to sell them. That is not really ethical. Nice places are ruined. So, I don't think that it is a matter of size. Instead, a lot of small and even big minerals can come from quarries, where they would have been destroyed anyhow....so this seems a better place to go and look for them. (except in abandoned quarries, where it than becomes part of the 'geoheritage'....
Sophie

Dear Sophie
What exactly do you mean with MINERAL SELLING IN OUR NATURAL SCIENCES INSTITUTE SHOPS?
Of course our museums shop at Bern Natural History Museum is selling minerals, however they are intended mainly for children (small Quartz-Crystall e.g.) and stem from local collectors and are collected in nearby Bernese Alps. So, such minerals are just thought as small gifts or souvenirs (similar to the omnipresent dinosaurs or plush-tigers) and I do not think that they are posing an ethic problem.
But I assume you are thinking of selling minerals on a much larger scale?
Best regards
Tom
