Dear Fellow ESG members, Having had surgery for a detached retina, I have to read everything twice to be sure I've got it right. On the first pass I read: "CRITICALLY ENDANGERED NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUMS: PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT FOR A BETTER WORLD" . Now that would be a talk worth listening to.... Regards, Mike. -----Original Message----- From: cetaf_earthsc@cetaf.simplelists.com <cetaf_earthsc@cetaf.simplelists.com> On Behalf Of laura.tilley@cetaf.org Sent: Thursday, February 22, 2024 10:27 AM To: cetaf_earthsc@cetaf.simplelists.com Subject: [CETAF_ESG] Fwd: CETAF Collection Group session 28 February: Civically Engaged Natural History Museums Dear ESG members, The CETAF Collection Group have another talk, that you may find of interest: Best Laura -------- Original Message -------- Subject: CETAF Collection Group session 28 February: Civically Engaged Natural History Museums Date: 2024-02-21 07:35 From: Luc Willemse <luc.willemse@naturalis.nl> To: Laurence Bénichou <laurence.benichou@mnhn.fr>, Isabelle Gerard <Isabelle.gerard@africamuseum.be>, Dirk Neumann <d.neumann@leibniz-lib.de>, "heimo.rainer@NHM-WIEN.AC.AT" <heimo.rainer@nhm-wien.ac.at>, Güntsch, Anton <A.Guentsch@bo.berlin>, Alessandro Marchi <amarchi@naturalsciences.be>, Gila Kahila <gila.kahila@mail.huji.ac.il>, Thierry Bourgoin <thierry.bourgoin@mnhn.fr>, marko.lovric@cetaf.org, Ana Casino <acasino@naturalsciences.be>, Iasmi Stathi <iasmistathi@gmail.com>, David Ott <D.Ott@leibniz-lib.de>, "laura.tilley" <laura.tilley@cetaf.org>, Luc Willemse <luc.willemse@naturalis.nl> Dear CETAF working Group leaders, For your information: Next week Wednesday, 28 FEBRUARY (11:00-12:00 CEST), the CETAF Collections Group organizes its second monthly session in 2024. This time the topic is: "CIVICALLY ENGAGED NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUMS: PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT FOR A BETTER WORLD" presented by Dr. Liz Hide, Director of the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge. Below is a short summary of her presentation: > _Working in and with natural history collections, we recognise the > value of our collections in contributing to impactful research around > climate change and biodiversity loss, and we are increasingly using > our collections to engage visitors with these themes. But climate > change is linked to a much wider set of societal challenges, including > social inequality, social isolation, discrimination and ill health. > In this talk I’ll be discussing who engages with our museums and > collections and who doesn’t, and I’ll use examples from the > University of Cambridge Museums to explore how, even on a modest scale > our natural history collections can enable us to better respond to the > issues and concerns that communities and society are experiencing. _ Following the presentation, there will of course be time for questions.
