Dear Dr. Geol. Vanni Moggi Cecchi, It is great to hear about the work you`ve performed on radioactive minerals. I believe it was need it. I would be very interested to learn more about the developed standard procedure for measuring radioactivity. Would it be available in the submitted paper? Most of them are minerals of the so-called calco-uranite or cupro-uranite group (autunite, torbernite, meta-, cuprosklodowskite etc.etc.). We prepared a set of analysis were we put just one samples per time on the table, in order to avoid the proximity of the boxes with several samples. We used professional detectors and, simultaneously, we took photographs of each sample. We are carrying out the digitization campaign of the set of samples and it will be published in the Italian cultural heritage database (ICCD) next year. As safety equipment we used FFP3 masks, black-lead-containing gloves covered with rubber gloves, a leaded apron and we remained at a distance of at least 1 meter from the specimen in analysis. We also developed a standard procedure for measuring radioactivity. Regarding this we have submitted a paper to Radiation Protection Dosimetry Journal on this subject. As concerns the equipment only the rubber gloves and the masks have been subjected to very small contamination so they can be thrown away safely. As concerns the detector it was enough far from the samples to be safe from contamination. We also used paper sheets to put the samples on the table and these could be easily removed. I hope these directions can be of help and I invite you to read the procedure paper as soon as it will be published. Best regards Vanni Dr. Geol. Since you hold significant geological collections, my question to you is: - do you have experience in the digitization of radioactive specimens? - if so, are you using specific procedures/ safety measures / ...? Many thanks in advance!
