Indeed for a CEF submission in 2019  we need 

1 a number of cetaf or dissco members who have collections images (here it can be broad including cultural heritage, archives, books, maps, illustrations beyond natural sciences specimens, items or observations (photographs)  not yet in Europeana reaching 1Mio or more. It must not be only earth sciences related at this level.

2' if a sufficient large amount of 3d images are provided with an improvement of the handling of them by the Europeana portal the 1mio objects informal number if not reach, may have a chance, but would not risk it as with 115 partners in DiSSCo and the overall advertised digitisation efforts, difficult to justify that such numbers cannot be reached.

3. The earth sciences VE exhibition needs then indeed to be accepted by the consortium in the «amazing content» part.

I am writing to explain further plans and developments for the Virtual Exhibition (VE). In the architecture document that I previously sent around not much has changed, I have just added the feedback that was provided from NHM Vienna, which had some important questions (attached). 

My contract ends 6th June 2019. I will provide a Gant chart/deadlines to help work flow. I will get started on developing content for the virtual exhibition now.

Bratislava meeting feedback

·         Patricia Mergen gave information about EUROPEANA CEF proposal for funding (I have attached Patricia’s presentation from the CETAF general meeting). Although, I do not know how we could promise 1 Mio collection items. So I think we should just focus on starting to build the prototype with some examples first to see how the virtual exhibition is received by others (e.g. CETAF community and a wider audience).  

·         Jiří Frank (NHM Prague) said that the VE design/architecture could be built using an open access webpage platform like WordPress, and that he could help build it. (currently out of office) – I have contacted him for further information (terms & conditions, costs etc).

·         Catherine Voreadou (NHM Crete) said that she could provide help in developing the educational aspect of the VE.

Examples to start with

I encourage members to contribute good examples for the VE (e.g. Media, Images of collections, written information. (I will continue to approach members individually).

·         The Ries and Steinheim Impacts: Use the collections provided in the publication (I will ask for permission), NHM Prague (J. Kvaček) have collections that could be used to expand on this event.

·         Earthquakes: NHM Crete (Babbis Fassoulas) potentially has substantial material on earthquakes.

·         Royal Museum for Central Africa (Caroline Michellier): Can provide information of modern day hazards in Africa.

·         Global Disaster: I suggest the Cretaceous/Paleogene Mass Extinction. We can use collections that we have already used from the publication and ask for further contributions.

Other news from societies which I have contacted

·         I emailed the Earth Science Teacher Association (ESTA) (UK based) to see if they would find the VE a useful resource and whether they could provide any input/advice. They responded positively saying that it sounds like a great resource and something that teachers would really appreciate. They also provided me with some specifications to help understand what our students are expected to know. This may differ for different countries.

·         American Geoscience Institutes and their Earth Science Week: They said that it would be an excellent match for the Earth Science Week, and provided links on how we could get involved (e.g. via social media etc. ). They have a website called Education Geosource possibly the exhibition could be advertised there also. The links are provided below.
