Hi Rachel,
My apologies for the slow reply. My memory was jogged as I have just been reading the NHM Science Plan to 2031 and it specifically mentions GeoCASE which is a very good start and a result for campaigning not to forget ES Collections when
it comes to data initiatives.
I’m copying this to Mike Rumsey as he is the curator in charge of the meteorite and mineral collections at NHM. I think we would both have the same question, ie how do we provide this data and in what format? You mention BioCASE provider
software. I am presuming we would need to use this to provide the details? Do we also need to have some mapping to ABCD(EFG) in order to provide these details? At present we can export Darwin Core details. Would these be useful at this point? I’ve copied in
Josh Humphries as lead for our data portal. I think there is appetite for being able to deliver data in ABCDEFG format but I don’t know if this is developed yet. Josh, perhaps you could comment?
All the best,
Giles

Dear Giles,
Thank you for your kind words! I will be formally taking over after the General Assembly meeting in October.
In the meantime you mentioned harvesting data. I am also involved with a GeoCASE advisory group and I was going to contact you anyway - about pretty much the question you raised.
We are looking for a few example datasets to test the out the GeoCASE Specimen pages for different specimen types and we are looking for say 10 examples of very detailed or complex datasets associated with specimens.
Ten meteorites, ten minerals and ten rocks, 10 fossils.
Lots of folk can provide fossil data but I wondered if you could provide the meteorite and even mineral7rock data. Do you have any with photos, chemical analyses or associated specimens (e.g. thin sections), or references (if types, or what have you).
The institutional registration number of these specimens would be very useful
We have some in NMS but at present our IT/CM depts have not installed the BioCASE provider software needed to harvest the data.
Thanks!
Rachel

Subject: RE: [CETAF_ESG] General ESG minutes
Thank you Laura for providing the minutes. I’m sorry that I was not able to make it. At that time I had a rare visit on site to show the designers of our new offsite storage some slide collections.
I have read the minutes and have some questions:
Does MVP mean minimum viable product rather than most valuable?
I was interested to hear that there was a harvesting system (I presume harvesting rather than harvating). It would be really interesting to see if it could work on our dataset. I continue to ask our data managers and data portal providers
for the ability to export ABCDEFG data as currently they have exports set up to Darwin Core standards. They are aware of this request and I hope that soon this will be possible. I was interested to see discussion about data cleaning. It is a hot topic for
us at the moment as the quality of our data being delivered to GBIF is currently low. I cannot see that we would have the resources to clean our entire dataset in time to deliver and I would hope that we could regularly load updates. However, this could be
a very time consuming process. Would it be possible to have some sort of flagging system that shows where there might be issues with data or perhaps that some data is sent back if it is not considered to be high enough quality? I know that we have checks like
these between the data leaving our CMS and being delivered to our portal and again when the data from our portal gets delivered to GBIF.
Finally, congratulations to Rachel! I am sure she will make a very good chair.
A massive thank you to Johanna for all the work you have put in to CETAF ESG. I hope we can catch up with you again before you retire.
All the best,
Giles

Dear ESG members,
Thank you to everyone that attended the ESG meeting yesterday. Please find the minutes below and make any necessary amendments (by end of tomorrow). Once finalised I will upload to the CETAF ESG filepot.
