Hi

I do not know, but I doubt so. We got a mail that so many abstracts came in in last minute that  the whole Standard track is over committed with submission, even if some symposium are not full.
We have been asked to review all those in our symposia, but not accept them yet, as we will be contacted to see if we want to take on board those from the over-committed sessions.
Abstracts already in the system and for which you want to do updates because you were in a hast can be corrected/updated, but additional ones will be difficult until we do not get more clarity.

all the best

Pat

Thanks everyone for submitting abstracts today and before!

Jiri. Just a final question. Should I get a submission e-mail from Pensoft? I’m just concerned that because my co-author has not accepted, it might not have gone through. Is this how it works ie all co-authors have to agree too before it is submitted?

Dear Jiri,

Yes the abstract for the Rio paper looks good. Thank you for putting it together.

I am hovering above the submit button for my abstract copied below. I hope I have made sufficient reference to biodiversity to make this relevant. The only issue I have is that I have not heard from my co-author to see if she accepts the abstract wording. Would it be a problem to edit it later if changes are suggested? I seem to remember that I agreed to help with editing abstracts for the symposium too ;>

The importance of storing and delivering geochemical metadata for Earth Science collections

C. Giles Miller

Kerstin Lehnert

The composition and state of the earth’s lithosphere through time has had profound effect on past and present biodiversity and will continue to do so into the future. Environments ranging from deep sea hydrothermal vents to active continental volcanic centres provide a wide range of ecosystems that have shaped the planet we know. Catastrophic events relating to movements of the lithosphere and events deep in the mantle have also caused major biodiversity changes such as mass extinctions. Our museum collections contain rock and fossil specimens collected from many of these environments and suites of samples specifically collected in order to better understand the evolution of our planet. Requests to carry out geochemical investigations on these samples are common and a large amount of data is generated as a result. Currently there are no natural history collections management systems tailored towards recording and delivering these datasets and the result is that the data is recorded in various distributed systems and cannot be easily assessed and used. It is important for these analyses on our museum collections to be delivered in a standard way so that the importance and relevance of these collections can be demonstrated and large datasets generated to answer big questions regarding the geological evolution of our planet. Examples of these questions include “how and when will volcanic eruptions will occur?” and “what has been the role of volcanism during mass extinction?”. Other geochemical studies such as oxygen isotope studies have been carried out on museum collections in order to investigate past oceanic environments and the effects of changes in climate on our oceans. Geochemical data aggregators such as EarthChem (https://www.earthchem.org/) have made great strides in working towards international data standards and providing portals for delivering this type of data. As we progress towards one European Collection (DiSSCo) it is vital that we recognise the importance of these geochemical datasets and include delivering them on the general roadmap.

Dear Jiri,

Thank you for the abstract of the RIO article. Nothing more to add.

As you said, some of the co-authors will certainly be present at the conference, if you are not willing to make this presentation.

And I support the idea to put all the co-authors of the RIO publication on this abstract.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the conference; so, I will not prepare a specific abstract.

Hi Pat,

any contribution related to the topic will be more than welcome. The deadline for abstract submission was quite short. About a month. It will be great to extend it at least for a week more. The conference is in October, so still plenty of time. What about to send separate requests to Dimitris to try to convince him to extend the deadline.

Please ask your colleagues. There is still time till tomorrow, if they will not extend it.

Hi

am in contact with the two groups in Tervuren active and in this list to see if they can submit an abstract.

even with the extension the deadlines of Biodiversity Next remain challenging and some of my colleagues had more a poster in mind.

I will cross check if they will submit an abstract for the symposium still until tomorrow. I have a similar issue with the Symposium I chair on standards alignments where I have up to now 2 submitted talk and a 3rd that may come in (as far as I am aware)

as "in standard alignments across Natural History domain" geology is also part,

if the organizing committee asked for merger and or cancel I am ok to join our two symposia.

all the best

thank you to bringing this up. At the moment we have one abstract accepted and two promised.

One topic which should be submitted at least is the recently published paper about disasters evidences in earth science collections. I was expected to receive this. If nobody is picking this up I will try. The deadline for submission is tomorrow. Still with this one and two promised (if they arrive) we will have 4 talks for 90 minutes, which is again a risk of cancelling the symposia and distribution those talks to others.

Thank you,

Fwd: [CETAF_ESG] Call for abstracts deadline extended for Biodiversity_Next

Dear colleagues,

I know, I am very late just emerging again (due to the elvaluation process and commission visit this week). However, it would be very appropriate to submit one or another abstract either from the ESG or from individuals. I suppose that many topics relevant also for ES are already covered with the symposia topics. Nevertheless this symposium offers a chance for us.

Could we exchange ideas today ....

Best Johanna

Below in brief from the conference website:

Symposium title: The role of earth science collections within biodiversity research.

objective:

Earth Science collections, like Life Science collections, have an important role in biodiversity research as they provide evidence for the evolutionary history of organisms, as well as helping to understand the impacts of natural hazards, disasters, and environmental and climate change.

The general aim of this symposium is to discuss and present the importance of Earth Science collections in biodiversity research and other cross-disciplinary subjects. The symposium is related to the implementation of metadata standards, publication of collection data via data portals, tools for mapping the data and conducting quality checks discussed at the TDWG Paleo Interest Group meeting.

The symposium will be open for talks related to Earth Science collections and research with special focus on the following topics:

- The role and implementation of fossil taxa in the taxonomic backbone (e.g. Catalogue of Life) and the role of geochemical data in related platforms.

- Defining minimal, optimal and full requirements for data records in digitised Earth Science collections.

- Implementation and usage of existing metadata standards and controlled vocabularies for Earth Science collections.

- Data portals, search and presentation platforms for Earth Science collections access, research and outreach.

Dear colleagues,

Since today we received just very few proposals for presentation in our symposium "The role of Earth Science collections within biodiversity research" in Biodiversity next conference in Leiden. https://biodiversitynext.org/list-of-symposia-and-workshops/

The abstract submission deadline has been extended till the end of this week (email bellow).

If you are intending to contribute by your presentation to the symposium, with scope focusing on Earth Science, please do so as soon as possible. Also please spread this request within your colleagues with potential interest to contribute. We have a great chance to discuss this topic within broader and important research community during this event.

I am afraid, if the number of presentation for the symposium is too low, the symposium will be cancelled and the presentation will be distributed within available tracks.

Please do not hesitate to contact me, if you have any question.

Kind Regards,

Jiri
